“Shah Rukh Khan Deserves That Glorious Crown”; Karan Johar Hails Pathaan And Jawan Success; Calls King Khan ‘Majestic’ And ‘Magnetic’

Oct 17, 2023

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who has collaborated with Shah Rukh Khan on several hit films, has expressed his admiration for the superstar and his recent movies Jawan and Pathaan. Karan Johar hailed Shah Rukh Khan as the “emperor of entertainment” and said he would go mad if he saw such numbers coming in for his film.

During an interaction held by Pinkvilla, Karan Johar talked about the current box office trends and particularly mentioned about the over-performance of Shah Rukh Khan’s films. Karan Johar said, “Your film is a superstar. Even if you have a superstar, your film has to work. Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar are all massive superstars. We have so many of them in the younger generation as well.”

Karan continued, “Shah Rukh has proven this year that he deserves that glorious crown. Look at the numbers (of Pathaan and Jawan). They are fantastic. I had never dreamt of (such figures). I’d go mad if I saw these numbers coming in for my film! But I am so proud that (it happened for a Shah Rukh Khan film).” He added, “Eventually, the film is a superstar.”

Jawan, which released in September, was Shah Rukh Khan’s second big release this year and became a huge blockbuster. The film collected Rs 1132.13 crore at the worldwide box office and is still running in theaters. Shah Rukh Khan played a double role in the film, as father and son. The film also starred Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi and Deepika Padukone in pivotal roles.

Before Jawan, Shah Rukh Khan had set the box office on fire with Pathaan, which was released in January. The film was an action thriller directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Aditya Chopra. Shah Rukh Khan played a secret agent who teams up with Salman Khan’s character from Tiger franchise to stop a global threat. The film also featured Deepika Padukone and John Abraham in key roles.

Karan Johar then explained that big-screen entertainers or sequels were the ones that saw success at the ticket window, “Everything that has worked has been an event film, be it Jawan, Pathaan or Gadar 2. Then Dream Girl 2 and Fukrey 3 were sequels. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani worked purely on the strength of its word of mouth. We didn’t open to a grand number. But the film got the love and hence, it went on to do the business that it eventually did.”

Karan Johar reveals how he became a fan of Shah Rukh Khan in their first meeting

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who has collaborated with Shah Rukh Khan on several iconic films, recently opened up about his first meeting with the superstar. In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, Karan shared some interesting anecdotes of how he was charmed by Shah Rukh’s personality and charisma.

Karan said that he accompanied his father, producer Yash Johar, to the sets of Karan Arjun in 1993, where his father was offering Shah Rukh a role in Duplicate. Karan said that he had heard some rumours that Shah Rukh was arrogant and knew what he was doing, but he was proven wrong in no time.

“He was wearing this bright orange Levi’s shirt. And you know how you build a perception and hear about movie stars and how they are? I had this impression that movie stars were a certain way because my father was a producer, and he’d dealt with many. With Shah Rukh, there was a lot of talk that he was kind of like arrogant… Not arrogant, but like he knew what he was doing because he comes from drama and theatre, but in one minute, I was just swept away by the magic of Shah Rukh Khan,” Karan said.

Karan added that Shah Rukh was very friendly and curious about his life. He asked him questions about his school and college, and looked into his eyes while talking to him. “He doesn’t give a damn about who you are and where you come from, and in five minutes I think I had become a fan. I was like Oh my God! He is the most amazing human being I think I’ve ever met. He was magical. I feel like most people who haven’t met Shah Rukh Khan have missed out because that is like that moment and it remains still today. He is majestic, of course, but he is magnetic,” Karan gushed.

Interestingly, Karan also revealed that this was not the actual first time he met Shah Rukh. He said that when he was 15 years old, he did a television show with filmmaker Aanand Mahendroo, which he is embarrassed about now. He said that one day, he saw a young man sitting across from him in Mahendroo’s office for hours, but they did not exchange a word. He later found out that it was Shah Rukh.

Karan and Shah Rukh have worked together on films such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, My Name Is Khan and a cameo appearance in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. They both have also produced films like Dear Zindagi and Ittefaq together.
