Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout 3 Plot Will Be Set Outside Mumbai – Here’s Why!

Jun 21, 2024

Veteran filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, known for his gritty crime dramas, has provided intriguing updates regarding the long-awaited third instalment of the Shootout franchise. Starting with the 2007 hit Shootout At Lokhandwala, renowned for its engrossing storyline, stellar cast, electrifying execution, and memorable music, Gupta’s series delved deep into Mumbai’s underworld.

The success of Shootout At Lokhandwala prompted Gupta to direct its sequel, Shootout At Wadala, released in 2013. Directed by Gupta himself, the sequel continued the saga of real-life encounters documented in S. Hussain Zaidi’s books. Fans have eagerly awaited news of a third instalment, and Gupta recently shared insights during an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama.

Sanjay Gupta Shares Shootout 3 Progress & Why It Will Be Set Outside Mumbai

“We are still working on its script,” Gupta revealed. He explained that attempts during the lockdown to craft a narrative detailing Mumbai’s crime-infested 90s didn’t come together.

“We wrote an entire script during the lockdown but then realised we didn’t want to go down that road. The genre of Mumbai crime in the 90s has become saturated. The Excel show, Bambai Meri Jaan, is also based in the same zone. Ab hum log kitna Dawood aur Chhota Rajan ka story karenge?,” he said.

“Hence, we went back to the drawing board and sat down with the writer’s team. Now, we are contemplating setting the story outside of Mumbai. So, Shootout 3 will be about some shootout that took place in another part of the country,” the director added.

Gupta and his team have opted to set Shootout 3 outside Mumbai. This decision aims to engage a broader audience across the country, moving away from the repetitive Mumbai-centric storyline. Gupta highlighted regional differences in audience interest.

He explained, “Both the Shootout films did not fare as well in Punjab as they did in Mumbai. Both films were hits, and yet, 60% of their revenue came from Maharashtra. Now, someone residing in Amritsar or Bathinda, usko kya malum Lokhandwala ya Wadala kya hai ya kahan hai? Hence, that is also the idea that we make it more appealing to a larger audience. When the story takes place in the heartland, then it becomes relatable to everybody.”

About Shootout Franchise

The Shootout franchise commenced with Shootout at Lokhandwala in 2007, depicting the true events of the 1991 shootout at Mumbai’s Lokhandwala Complex. Led by the fearless cop Khan, portrayed by Sanjay Dutt, a team of officers confronts gangsters hiding in the residential area. The film captures the intense showdown between police and criminals with gripping drama and high-octane action, starring Vivek Oberoi and others. Watch the trailer here.

Shootout at Wadala followed in 2013, drawing inspiration from incidents chronicled in S. Hussain Zaidi’s book Dongri To Dubai. The movie portrays the first recorded encounter by the Bombay Police, focusing on gangster Manya Surve, played by John Abraham. A minor dispute escalates into a life-altering situation for Surve, unfolding a gritty, violent narrative that confronts the harsh realities of encounters in Mumbai.
