Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana At Risk? Ram Gopal Varma WARNS Against Making Mythological Films: ‘It’s Dangerous, You Can’t Try In Our Country’

Aug 3, 2024

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is known for his bold views and has now shared his opinion on the trend of mythological films in India.

As we know. Ranbir Kapoor starrer Ramayana is in the making. Amid this he called making mythological films ‘risky,’ noting that while they thrived in the past, today’s chances of success are slim without stirring up controversy. Varma proposed finding new ways to tell these stories to steer clear of religious disputes.

Here’s Why Ram Gopal Varma FEELS Making Mythological Films Could Be Dangerous

In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Varma labelled these films as ‘dangerous’ and highlighted the challenges they face in today’s cultural climate.

Varma explained that while mythological films were successful in the past, the current landscape is fraught with risk. “It’s very dangerous to make films on mythological stories,” he said.

“The stories which are known to people and you try to make it different, it can have a reverse effect. You can’t try this in our country because people worship them. In both ways, I think it’s very dangerous,” he added.

He elaborated that the situation was different decades ago. Films like Babubhai Mistry’s Sampurana Ramayana and those by NT Rama Rao enjoyed success at a time when such adaptations were less contentious. Today, however, social media and varying interpretations have intensified scrutiny and polarisation around these stories.

Varma Cites Examples From Adipurush To Justify His Viewpoint

Varma pointed to recent examples like Om Raut’s Adipurush, which faced backlash, particularly concerning Saif Ali Khan’s portrayal and the depiction of Hanuman. He noted that the critical scrutiny surrounding mythological adaptations makes them risky ventures for filmmakers.

He suggested a different approach to presenting these stories. Instead of branding a new film as Ramayana, Varma proposed creating fresh narratives that avoid the direct associations with revered mythological tales. This, he argued, could mitigate potential controversies. “Marketing Adipurush as a film starring Prabhas would be perceived differently than if it were presented as Ramayana,” he said.

Varma, who began his directing career in 1989 with the Telugu film Siva, has a history of directing impactful films like Rangeela, Satya, and Bhoot. He acknowledged the efforts of filmmakers tackling these sensitive subjects but maintained that approaching them with caution is essential in today’s environment.
