Chandu Champion Director Kabir Khan On Underperformance Of Kartik Aaryan Starrer At The BO: ‘It’s Not The Only Parameter To Judge A Film’
Kabir Khan‘s latest directorial, Chandu Champion, starring Kartik Aaryan, did not perform as expected at the box office. However, the seasoned filmmaker remains unfazed, emphasising that the love from the audience and the lasting impact of his films are what truly matter to him.
In a recent interview with Mid-day after attending the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM), Kabir discussed the film’s underperformance.

The filmmaker emphasised the importance of a film’s lasting impact over time. “Any filmmaker who says that box office doesn’t matter is not speaking the truth; it does. But it’s not the only parameter to judge a film. The most important for me is how much the film is remembered and spoken about after some time passes,” Kabir stated.
He noted that Chandu Champion, much like his previous work 83 (2021), has seen repeat viewings on OTT platforms, which to him, signifies a film’s lasting legacy.
Kabir shared that even though Chandu Champion didn’t meet box office expectations, it still connected deeply with the audience. He reflected on his directorial debut, Kabul Express (2006), which had the lowest box office numbers among his films, yet 18 years later, people still approach him with praise for the film.
“There are lots of different parameters today through which you judge how deeply a film has connected,” Kabir remarked, highlighting that box office numbers are just one aspect of a film’s success.
Kartik Aaryan & Kabir Khan Were Recently Honoured For The Film At IFFM 2024
At the IFFM, Chandu Champion was recognised with prestigious accolades. Kartik Aaryan took home the Best Actor award, while Kabir Khan was honoured with the Best Director trophy.
Kabir expressed that these awards hold special significance as they come from an international jury, composed of celebrated filmmakers and critics who judge based solely on the film’s merit. For Kabir, this recognition provides a strong sense of validation, reinforcing his belief in the film’s value.

Chandu Champion is a biopic that tells the inspiring story of Murlikant Petkar, India’s first Paralympic gold medalist. Born on 1st November 1944 in Maharashtra, Petkar overcame numerous obstacles in his life and excelled in multiple sports, particularly wrestling and hockey.
The film traces his journey, showcasing the various phases and challenges he faced. Chandu Champion also marks Kartik Aaryan’s first collaboration with Kabir Khan, with the film being jointly produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Kabir Khan.
Despite the film’s performance at the box office, Kabir Khan remains focused on the love it has received from audiences and the legacy it will leave behind.
