Emergency: Gippy Grewal Calls For Sikh Representation On CBFC Amid Certification Delay & Controversy

Sep 7, 2024

Actor and singer Gippy Grewal has taken a stand for better Sikh representation in Indian cinema by urging the inclusion of a Sikh member on the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

His call for action comes at a time when Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency faces scrutiny for allegedly misrepresenting the Sikh community.

Gippy Grewal Calls For Sikh Representation In CBFC Amid Emergency Certification Delay

Grewal, who is promoting his upcoming film Ardaas Sarbat De Bhale Di, argues that a Sikh representative on the CBFC would ensure a more nuanced review of films that depict Sikhism or Punjab.

He emphasised that while the CBFC can address broad content issues, it might lack the cultural and religious insight needed to accurately assess potential misrepresentations of Sikh beliefs.

“The board can check on the larger things, but it is important for an expert member to check things from a religious perspective,” Grewal told India Today.

The push for Sikh representation is particularly timely as Emergency, slated for release on September 6, faces delays due to pending approval from the CBFC.

The film, which explores the 1975 Emergency period in India, has raised concerns among Sikh groups for potentially misrepresenting their community.

SGPC’s Call For Emergency’s Ban

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), a prominent Sikh religious organisation, has been vocal in its criticism, calling for the film to be banned unless Sikh perspectives are included in the certification process.

“It is very important to include a Sikh member in the Central Film Censor Board, as unilateral decisions are being taken only because of the absence of a Sikh member,” the SGPC said in a statement.

Gippy Grewal has set a precedent with his own film by obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Hazur Sahib, a significant Sikh shrine in Maharashtra, before submitting it for certification. He believes that such religious consultation should be standard practice for films depicting Sikhism.

“Having a Sikh representative in the board is important for films which talk about Sikhism, represent the community, or represent the state of Punjab in any form,” Grewal said. He argued that this approach could help prevent misunderstandings and controversies.
