Javed Akhtar REVEALS Farhan Akhtar & Zoya Akhtar Calling His Dialogues ‘Outdated’, Was Asked To Write Lines For Dog In Dil Dhadakne Do
Veteran screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar has been a significant figure in the Hindi film industry for decades. Known for his iconic dialogues in classics like Sholay, Deewar, and Mr India, Javed’s contribution to cinema is undeniable.
Recently, he opened up about his children, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar, sharing some humorous insights into their dynamic, particularly around his writing style.
Javed Akhtar Says Farhan & Zoya Dream In English, Calls His Writing Style ‘Outdated’
In a recent episode of Sapan Verma’s show, Chill Sesh, Javed discussed how his children view his work. He revealed that Farhan and Zoya “dream in English” and believe that his writing style feels a bit “outdated.”
Unlike them, Javed’s roots lie in “Urdu or Hindustani,” languages he feels he has a stronger command over when it comes to storytelling.
The 79-year-old screenwriter shared that his children often refer to some of his lines as “traditional” and sometimes even “outdated.”
“They can blackmail me in that area,” he joked, reflecting on the playful banter they share about his dialogues. Despite their differing perspectives, Javed maintains a proud stance on his linguistic abilities.
Javed also reminisced about his collaboration with Farhan on the film Lakshya. He recalled how he wrote dialogues for Zoya’s debut film, Luck By Chance, but noted that she didn’t reach out to him for subsequent projects until Dil Dhadakne Do came around.

During this collaboration, Zoya asked her father to pen a few lines for a thinking dog. Javed shared, “Usmein ek dog tha jo sochta tha. Toh us kutte ke dialogue usne mujhse likhwaye, baaki maine nahin likhe hain.”
(In the film, there was a dog who could think. Zoya asked me to write that dog’s dialogue. I haven’t written anything in the movie apart from the dog’s lines.)
Zoya once remarked that no one could “capture a dog’s thoughts” better than her father, a compliment that Javed cherished. It highlights their close bond and the respect Zoya has for her father’s creative skills, even if they approach filmmaking from different angles.
