Jul 8, 2024

Nag Ashwin’s latest directorial venture, Kalki 2898 AD, has not only shattered box office records in India with a staggering collection of over Rs 900 crore global gross but has also rejuvenated Amitabh Bachchan in his iconic ‘Angry Young Man’ avatar.

In the film, Bachchan portrays the character of Ashwatthama, cursed by Lord Krishna to live until eternity. In a recent interview, Nag Ashwin talked about his character and revealed why Big B was his only choice for the role. He also expressed gratitude to Megastar for accepting the role and giving more than expected from him.

Nag Ashwin Calls Ashwatthama ‘Indian Version Of Gandalf’

Reflecting on casting Bachchan in this pivotal role, Ashwin shared, “Maybe I didn’t grow up watching his films as obsessively as maybe a generation before mine. But he’s definitely a massive hero, and I have seen a lot of his films. And when I wrote Ashwathama, one thing for sure was I could only see him and nobody else. Maybe it was an Indian version of our Gandalf and I could only see him.”

Director Is Glad Big B Agreed For The Role

Ashwin continued, emphasising Bachchan’s unique suitability for the role, “Only he could do justice because it required that depth and melancholy of the act and that action. There’s nobody who could pull everything together. So I am glad he agreed.”

Addressing concerns about Bachchan’s age and the demands of the role, Ashwin reassured fans, “We worked around his safety and other things first. But he would give it everything and sometimes even more than we would ask for.”
